The KU Leuven now holds fifth position in the world ranking of the most innovative universities. It is the only non-American institution to appear in the top five. Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard and University of Pennsylvania are the only ones to feature higher on Reuters' ranking.

The fact that KU Leuven has a high score in Europe was already confirmed in the European ranking published earlier this year by Reuters. Now the university's presence among the world's elite in innovation can be confirmed. KU Leuven went up four places compared to last year. Ghent University is also included in the top 100 this year, at number 75.
Reuters created the ranking based on ten parameters. These range from the number of articles published in scientific journals, to patent requests for the protection and commercialisation of the university's research results.
By achieving fifth place, KU Leuven once again demonstrates the high regard for Belgian universities. Recently the ‘Times Higher Education’ journal included KU Leuven, Ghent University, Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in its list of the world's 200 best universities.
